Embedded Systems Unsuitable for Object Orientation

چکیده

It is argued that the current focus on object technology is detrimental to progress in embedded systems. The core of the problem is that object orientation is fine for analysis but does not answer the design needs. Solutions for shortcomings are sought within the OO dogma, making things worse. This paper will outline a different approach and will discuss benefits of that approach relative to object orientation.

The design of an object-oriented environment and language for teaching

While object-orientation has been widely accepted as an important programming paradigm, teaching object-orientation remains difficult. Experience reports suggest that some problems can be avoided by teaching object-orientation as the first language in an introductory course. However, other problems remain, in particular languages and environments are regularly criticised as unsuitable and overl...

Embedded Platforms for Distributed Real-Time Computing: Challenges and Results

Object-oriented techniques have been along the last decade one of the most useful programming paradigms. However, for distributed embedded systems the semantic gap between the object-orientation layer and the underlying infrastructure is extremely large. This gap can be narrowed, should the embedded system platform provide semantically rich communication and management services. This paper outl...

Streamlined PURE Systems?

Embedded and especially deeply embedded systems tend to offer extremely limited resources. Until now, this means a massive barrier for applying approved object-oriented design principles and abstractions to related operating systems. In this paper, the reasons are discussed why object orientation left on its own will burst the given limits. It is also suggested in brief how to improve the creat...

Vision Guided Robot Gripping Systems

Industrial robots are used customary without any embedded sensors. They rely on a predictable pose of an object (position and orientation in 6 degrees of freedom, 6DOF) when performing the task of gripping parts located for instance on palettes or assembly lines. In practice though, a part can easily deviate from its ideal nominal location and a robot having no embedded sensors can miss or cras...

DERAF: A High-Level Aspects Framework for Distributed Embedded Real-Time Systems Design

Distributed Embedded Real-time Systems (DERTS) have several requirements directly related to characteristics that are difficult to handle when a pure object-oriented method is used for their development. These requirements are called Non-Functional Requirements (NFR) and refer to orthogonal properties, conditions, and restrictions that are spread out over the system. Pure object-oriented method...
